Your Server and Your Data are on the Edge of a Cliff…

Which one do you save? This old technology adage is certainly as valid today as it was twenty years ago. Storage vendors traditionally used this analogy to make the point that you could always buy another server, but if you lost your data, your business could disappear, or at best suffer significant damage.

Although

Storage vendors traditionally used this analogy to make the point that you could always buy another server, but if you lost your data, your business could disappear, or at best suffer significant damage.

Although this analogy is as true today as it was 20 years ago, the difference now is that in today’s technology world your data, and for that matter your applications, can be affordably protected and distributed in ways never imagined 20 years ago.

Cloud-based solutions, for example DICOM image storage as a service, can be effectively and affordably utilized to meet HIPAA requirements for disaster recovery and business continuance contingencies for image data. Cloud based services can

Prior Authorization Reason Behind a Vast Majority of Image Claim Denials

A recent study by the nonprofit Patient Advocacy Foundation, as reported in an article posted on diagnosticimaging.com, suggests that not only is prior authorization the reason for a vast majority of insurance denials for imaging exams, but that over 90 percent of these denials are for services covered by the insurance plans who issue the claim denials. The insurance denials cited reasons such as “not medically necessary,” “benefit exclusion” and “necessary prior authorization needed to be obtained.” for their denials. A quote from the executive director of the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance from the same article posted on diagnosticimaging.com:

“Health care decisions should be made by physicians and their patients,

  • You’ll probably buy another car, with a higher payment, before the first finance term is up
  • That “new car smell” sure smells good for a while!

Sounds kind of like buying expensive new electronic storage for your PACS, doesn’t it? Except for the “new car smell”!

Mergers and Acquisitions in Radiology

It’s well known that the imaging industry is going trough many changes. One such change that can unnerve many independent radiology practices is the ongoing consolidation of private practices through acquisitions by local hospitals and or health systems.  From an article recently posted on diagnosticimaging.com:

“In fact, a recent Diagnostic Imaging survey found nearly 70 percent of respondents were ‘very’ or a ‘little’ worried about being acquired by a hospital or health system. It’s likely that an increasing number of radiology practices will be faced with the possibility as healthcare reform barrels toward an accountable or coordinated care model. Industry experts predict integrated providers, including ones with imaging specialists, will be the leaders within
